Painting Soho London Wooden Floor Boards - Prepare, Fill, Prime and then Paint a Wooden Floor

Here the client wanted to keep the living space clean throughout with white walls and light floors, creating light and space throughout the apartment. 

We all know the practicalities of living with white / ivory carpets, especially in the hallway and living areas.  

So after much debate, we went for the option of painting the existing floor boards. Overall they were in good condition, so it did seemed a shame not to use as a feature and retain the true character of this 1890's Soho building.

Soho London project 

• Secure all loose floor boards making sure not to damage any water pipes or electrical cables below.
• Ensure the floor is thoroughly clean using an appropriate floor cleaner.
• Sand to a smooth finish, vacuum and wipe down with a damp cloth.
• Prime floor boards. Here I used a top quality shellac based primer/sealer. Priming prior to filling, highlights all the filling that is required especially helpful when preparing a dark wood floor.
• Fill any open joins and cracks and nail holes with an appropriate wood filler.
• Sand to a smooth finish, vacuum and wipe down with a damp cloth.
• Prime and seal filled areas with the shellac based primer.
• Apply two coats of Dulux floor paint.
• Allow the correct drying time between coats.
• Refrain from dragging heavy furniture across the surface for at least  72 hours.
