The Influence of Colour

The influence of colour within an interior is well documented with particular attention being paid to the base palette.
There is a great need to be able to make the right decisions with colour. If you get it right, then the entire scheme will be a great success. Get it even slightly wrong and ambience of the interior will never feel entirely comortable.

Colour does not necessarily need to be introduced by painting walls and ceilings. Spectacular results can be achieved by using materials, textures, patterns, light and shade.

When people consider colour, they usually imagine bright or strong colours, but in interiors, muted colours have equal importance and influence over the ambience of the interior.

Colours mean different things to different people so it is imperative to see how clients see different colours and also to check the amount of natural light surrounding and entering the space. When you mention colour to a client, straight away the can become intimidated or nervous as they themselves see and feel colour in their own unique way.

Often warmer palettes of cream and brown can make an interior feel very tired and claustrophobic. While cool palettes can be exciting and inspirational as it can present a blank canvas for you to embellish them with colourful fabrics and textures completely changing the feel of the interior.

Once a base palette has been established with the client, you are then in a position to proceed with accent colours, materials and textures. Often the client is swayed by current trends but it is important to make them realise that the interior will be out of date by the time you have finished the project.

Keeping patterns simple increases their longevity, possibly using several different patterns within the scheme as long as they share the same colours.

Mixing bold colours can bring a dimension of fun and result in incredibly powerful schemes.
